He spoke on the subject of “A review of the draft arbitration law in light of the best international practices.” He highlighted the important aspects of the draft law praising the Qatari legislator for incorporating the QFC Civil and Commercial Court as a competent court, alongside the Court of Cassation, to determine matters relating to arbitration based upon the agreement of the parties. This is an important addition as it gives the parties the right to choose the most suitable court to determine the matter depending upon the nature of the dispute that has been subjected to arbitration.
Moreover, Mr. Al Sahouti spoke highly of the QFC Civil and Commercial Court, otherwise known as the Qatar International Court, highlighting, in particular, the calibre of the international judiciary who sit at the Court, the electronic case management system, the efficient and cost effective procedures and the transparency of the court process and public availability of judgments.
Mr. Al Sahouti expressed his hope that the new arbitration law, once enacted, will encourage parties to arbitrate in Qatar as the country aims to align its arbitration procedures in accordance with best international practice.
